Developing strategic energy partnership between countries and regions
- In November 2022, we hosted the Joint Forum Lower Saxony-Scotland organised by Leuphana University Lüneburg together with the European Centre for Advanced Studies (ECAS) and UofG. It led to ECAS' very first White Paper: Energizing Democratic Partnerships – Securing Electricity from Democratic Friends.

Membership to international organisations
- We are active members of the European Geothermal Energy Council (EGEC), a non-profit international organisation founded in 1998 to promote the European geothermal industry and enable its development both in Europe and worldwide, by shaping policy, improving business condition, and driving more research and development.

As part of the UNESCO International Geoscience Programme (IGCP 636) the University of Glasgow took part in the 2024 webinar series to provide an overview of geothermal research activities. The primary objective of IGCP-636 is to promote the use of geothermal resources as a clean, low-carbon, base-load, and renewable energy. The three targets of the programme are: i) to increase knowledge and understanding of deep geothermal reservoirs; ii) to conduct outreach activities with focus groups and communities; ii) and to promote the installation of geothermal heat pumps.
Gioia Falcone, David Banks, Julien Mouli-Castillo and Christopher Brown provided several presentations highlighting the innovative research looking to advance the geothermal sector. These focused on i) geothermal energy resource assessments, ii) mine water geothermal exploitation methods highlighting lessons learnt from case studies, iii) new tool development for geothermal mine water heating modelling (GEMSToolbox) and iv) numerical modelling of closed-loop geothermal systems with specific application to borehole thermal energy storage.'

International PhD networks
- In 2023, we co-hosted the European Geothermal PhD Days (EGPD 2023), which resulted in a Post-event Summary Report
highlighting the key role of early career researchers in the energy transition.
