Optimisation of materials and engineering devices

Structural optimisation is the method of selecting the optimal engineering design subject to various constraints. Mathematical methods include topology and shape optimisation. In addition, designing the microstructure that produces the optimal macroscopic response is an area of active research in the GCEC.  This is particularly challenging when the system is coupled or undergoes inelastic deformation.
