Coronavirus: The Science Explained
Senior CVR researchers are contributing to a new public website for those interested in the science of COVID-19. Allowing us to ensure our expertise relevant to the current coronavirus outbreak is also available to the general public.
‘Coronavirus: The Science Explained’ is a UK Government initiative funded through UKRI to provide trusted and authentic information to the general public. The website is regularly updated to provide the evidence and the facts about the virus, the disease, the epidemic, and its control.
CVR staff are responsible for content related to the virus itself, it’s taxonomy and nomenclature; relation of SARS-CoV-2 to other coronaviruses; viral structure and genome; mechanism of host infection and multiplication; mutation, genetic variation and pathogenicity.

CVR staff have provided scientific commentary and analysis to a range of media outlets.
ITV News Science Editor Tom Clarke visited the CVR to record an overview of our contribution to the UK’s genomic sequencing efforts to coincide with the announcement of the COVID-19 Genomics UK Consortium.
Webinar organised by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. Dr Antonia Ho Clinical Senior Lecturer/Consultant in Infectious Disease at the CVR spoke about the epidemiology of COVID-19 during the event, which also heard from leading experts across the globe who noted lessons from Hong Kong and South Korea, and how the UK is learning from the experience of others.
