Future Memories: An Exhibition Exploring Place, Place-making and Home brings together work from three projects involving children and young people from Glasgow Schools, the Red Road Flats and Schools in Wales exploring place, place making and home through photography, art and music.
The exhibition formally opens on Thursday 29 November with a reception from 3:30 - 5pm at the Level 5 Gallery, St. Andrew's Building, University of Glagow on Eldon Street. All are welcome and asked to RSVP to GRAMNet for catering purposes. The exhibition runs from 26 November - 7 December, Mon - Fri, from 10 - 5pm daily.
The exhibition is one of the outcomes of the Translating Russian and Eastern European Cultures (TREEC) programme. TREEC, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), was established in 2011 to explore the multiple ways in which Russian and East European cultures are translated, constructed and narrated within the multidisciplinary and multicultural context of Russian, Central and East European Studies.

Translating Russian and East European Cultures
This first project explored multiple ways in which Russian and East European cultures are translated, constructed and narrated through social, cultural and artistic encounters. Ideas about place and home are of particular significance in understanding different cultures and the ways in which they translate, perhaps especially in the experiences of those people who have moved between countries or may feel strong cultural and personal attachments to different places and homes.
Within this project pupils from the Shawlands Academy and Govan High School took part in a series of workshops looking at ways of expressing and capturing the meanings of place and home. The photo exhibition is accompanied by a short animated film in which the pupils talk about their experiences of the project, the pictures they have taken and what these mean to them.
The Red Road project
Street level Photoworks present 2 series of photographs from their community programme at Red Road Flats:
- Then and Now: New photographic work made by the Red Road Snappers. A group of girls aged 10 – 16 resident at Red Road flats documenting the changes in their local area.
- End Of The Red Road: Photographic work made by Iseult Timmermans at the Red Road Community studio in 2011 with local residents, prior to 10 Red Road Court’s final decant and closure in February 2012. Delivered in collaboration with Glasgow Life and GHA, with support from Awards For All.
Future Memory in Place: 1000 Colours Blue
This project is a re-imagining of landscape through sound and colour inspired by research into the ancient world. 1000 colours of blue have been collected from observing the Swansea landscape by the local community, including pupils from: Cila, Cwm Glas, Cwmrhydyceirw, Dylan Thomas, Hendrefoilan, Morriston, Parkland, Sea View and St. Helens. These colours have been painted onto 1000 canvases representing a shared experience of place that is not based in territory but through action and encounter. The exhibition of canvases is accompanied by a film of the public performance in which this landscape is re-imagined through colour and sound.
