About the Conference

Leading academics will examine the following themes: What is Area Studies?; The Ethics of Fieldwork; Conducting Research in other cultures and issues of translation and Academic/practitioner engagement: How to achieve impact.

Eligibility: The conference is free and open to postgraduate research students studying at one of the following language based area studies (LBAS) centres of excellence:

Centre for Russian, Central and East European Studies (CRCEES): University of Glasgow and the Universities of Aberdeen, Durham, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Nottingham, St. Andrews and Strathclyde

The Centre for the Advanced Study of the Arabic World (CASAW): University of Edinburgh, University of Manchester and University of Durham

The Centre for East European Language-Based Area Studies (CEELBAS): University College London and the Universities of Bath, Birmingham, Cambridge, Kent,  Manchester, Oxford, Sheffield, Warwick, and the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London.

The White Rose East Asia Centre (WREAC): University of Leeds and University of Sheffield

The British Inter-University China Centre (BICC): University of Oxford, University of Bristol and University of Manchester

How to apply: Note places are limited to the first 40 students to apply. We will cover students’ travel expenses and the costs of two nights’ accommodation. Applicants will be accepted on a first come, first served basis. When applying please also include the name of your (i) university; (ii) LBAS Centre; (iii) programme of study (e.g. PhD); and (iv) a short paragraph detailing both your research interests and the methodologies which you use or intend to use in your research.
