Behaviour, Structure and Interventions

The world is taking another pivotal turn, societies are on the move, the sustainability of the globe is challenged, laying the ground for populism and self-interest instead of morality and social cohesion. In this shifting landscape the legacy of the founder of the discipline of economics, Adam Smith, is more relevant than ever. The University of Glasgow launches this Summer Institute series with a key annual event for the years 2019-2022 in an attempt to approach the core research, methodological and policy challenges for the future of our society. We invite you to join us at the birthplace of The Theory of Moral Sentiments and The Wealth of Nations to examine the key pressing issues in relation to “Community and Change”, which include but are not restricted to migration, socio-economic and health inequalities, climate change, and crime and justice.

Our approach goes beyond the conventional disciplinary and methodological boundaries, is informed by theory but follows primarily applied and empirical approaches, trying to take advantage of newly available data. Instead of focusing only on addressing these challenges, we equally concentrate on identifying new questions for the future.

The structure of the Summer Institute is holistic. The events are inspired by the life, the culture and the challenges the city of Glasgow is facing, which are also relevant for other communities and for the world as a whole. The annual theme is scheduled around the research workshop with global experts on the topic. Importantly, there is also a training session on research methods and PhD presentations, while the event concludes with a networking, impact and knowledge exchange symposium that brings together global scholars, entrepreneurs, policymakers and communities, examining challenges and future opportunities. All the participants are invited to stay for the entire event, interact, build research collaborations and develop grant-writing synergies.

The Economics Department is organising two workshops on “The Economics of the Family: research findings, policy and impact” at the University of Glasgow in June 2020. Our aim is to bring together novel research on international and internal migration. The Research Workshop takes place on 2-3 June 2020, followed by a PhD Workshop on 4 June 2020. This is the second event of the annual University of Glasgow Summer Institute series on “Community and Change”, funded via the Principal’s Office and the Adam Smith Business School.

Summer Institute series on “Community and Change”

The Economics Department is organising two workshops on “Migration and Mobility: research findings, policy and impact” at the University of Glasgow in June 2019. The aim of the workshops is to bring together novel research on international and internal migration. The Research Workshop takes place on 10-11 June 2019, followed by a PhD Workshop on 12 June 2019. While participants may attend the individual workshops, we welcome anybody interested to stay for both events. This is the inaugural event of the annual University of Glasgow Summer Institute series on “Community and Change”, funded via the Principal’s Office and the “Behaviour, Structure & Interventions” interdisciplinary research network.
