This device is intended to allow students to investigate their temperature sense and their tolerance to heating of their skin. This type of testing replicates classical ‘pain tolerance’ tests in an intrinsically safe way. The maximum temperature is limited to 44 degrees and this is below the temperature at which skin is burned. See http://www.antiscald.com/prevention/general_info/table.php.

The student will place their fingers on the metal plates and when the test begins the temperature of the plates rises in a controlled way. The rate of rise is determined by the control software. When the student reaches their limit of heat tolerance, they remove their fingers from the plate. The software records the plate temperature and the time taken from the start of the experiment.

This device allows simple, reliable measurements of heat tolerance. It will allow class experiments to investigate how repeatable these limits are and what effect the rate of change of temperature has.
