American Studies at Glasgow – special events
On occasion the Andrew Hook Centre for American Studies hosts special events by leading figures whose expertise can shed light on different aspects of the American experience. Visitors and presenters have included:
Bruce Molsky
A leading American traditional and folk musician and singer, twice nominated for Grammay Awards.
Sam Maddra
A Glasgow graduate who became the world’s leading expert on the Ghost Dance shirt held by Glasgow Museums since the 1890s. Dr. Maddra gave evidence to repatriation hearings, and accompanied this sacred artifact on its return to South Dakota.
Ken Burns
Oscar-nominated documentary maker, who films have explored a wide range of topics related to American identity and the American experience.
Toni Morrison
Perhaps America’s greatest living novelist, and winner of both the Pulitzer and Nobel Prizes for literature.
