The ARC will be officially opened by Professor David MacMillan on Wednesday 8th of June.
We are delighted to announce that the ARC, the Mazumdar-Shaw Advanced Research Centre, will be officially opened by Professor David MacMillan on Wednesday 8th of June.
The opening ceremony will celebrate that the ARC is officially open and provide an opportunity to thank our donors and supporters. Around 100 guests are expected to attend including representatives of the ARC’s principal external stakeholder groups.
A number of places have been reserved for staff at the morning ceremony and details on how to book them will be released shortly.
In addition, there are plans to welcome a wider community of staff to the ARC in the afternoon for a broader celebration.
UofG alumnus David MacMillan, a current Princeton University professor, was a winner of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2021, alongside Benjamin List, for his work creating green organic catalysts.
David MacMillan said, “Being asked to open the ARC is an honour. This creative and experimental approach to research is incredibly exciting and I love how open the building is to the public and the local community. I’m excited to learn more about the ambitions of the ARC and look forward to opening the building in June.”
Professor Andrew Tobin, Director of the ARC, said; “We are delighted to welcome David to open the ARC and celebrate this milestone with us. The ambition of the ARC and our approach is very much in line with David’s team approach to research. The ARC will help facilitate collaborations across disciplines, allowing colleagues from different research areas to share space and meet people with new ideas and interests. David is an inspirational researcher, and we are proud to host him at the ARC.”
The ARC has been named after Glasgow graduate John Shaw and Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw. The couple gifted $7.5million to the University in July 2019 and it is hoped that they will make the journey to Glasgow to attend the opening.
Following on from the official opening of the ARC in June, the ARC Launch Festival, ARCadia, will run from 16 September to 30 September 2022.
An open call has been launched for events and activities that will showcase, celebrate and engage the public with the fantastic diversity of research and innovation happening in Glasgow. If you want to be part of this celebratory festival, you can submit your ideas at ARCadia 2022.
