ARC MakerSpace - The ARC’s latest creative resource

What is it and who is it for?

The ARC MakerSpace is an exciting resource where you can transform ideas into practical products, solutions, research artefacts, and artistic outputs.

Initially, the MakerSpace is open for bookings to ARC Residents while we test systems and policies. Combined with this, there will be a programme of wider access through curated sessions. In the longer term, the MakerSpace will be available to the wider University community.

For the time being, anyone interested to access the space should contact:

Kelly.Hawkins@glasgow.ac.uk for requests relating to research projects in the ARC.

Kenneth.Skeldon@glasgow.ac.uk for anything else including public engagement.

How does access work and is there a cost?

Use of the space is organised across zones, depending on the equipment needed. A small hourly fee offsets maintenance and general top up of consumables. For situations where specific materials are needed, for instance to laser cut or drill, these costs will be the responsibility of users. There is also a no-cost option to book access to the room’s central workspace, where no specific equipment is required. Users may also bring their own small items to work on.

What equipment does the MakerSpace have?

The space is equipped with crafting kits, sewing machines, 3D printers, electronics and tool stations, and a laser cutter. It’s a welcoming environment, designed with plenty of space for curated sessions and events.

Events and Engagement

The MakerSpace will also host activities and events linked to the University’s wider engagement and social programmes. The space is equipped with two portable Maker Trolleys giving the possibility to mount ‘Pop-Up’ Maker activities in different parts of the building. Information on programmes will be communicated through newsletters, ARC Life and the ARC What’s On in case of public events.
