Short Description
This course will allow the student to consolidate and extend their learning from courses undertaken during their programme of studies to undertake a supervised dissertation, including writing it up and presenting the findings to peers.
Timetable
There are no formal teaching sessions for this course. However, students will be expected to maintain regular contact with their supervisor(s) as the project progresses.

Submission of a dissertation in the form of an original research or work-based project or similarly substantial piece of work (7,500-10,000 words) 75%

Course Aims
This course aims to facilitate students undertaking a study or project on a topic relevant to their specialist area or professional interest. It requires them to draw on their own knowledge of key concepts and theories gained from other parts of the programme, in order to present a coherent masters level dissertation. The topic of the dissertation will be agreed with the course coordinator and students will be appointed an appropriate supervisor.
Intended Learning Outcomes of Course
By the end of this course students will be able to:
■ Plan and execute a substantial piece of research or project (such as a clinical research, work-based audit, service evaluation or learning and teaching evaluation) with the support of a dissertation supervisor.
■ Identify and design an appropriate research question or project plan, demonstrating an understanding of the ethical and regulatory issues involved, and taking in to account resources (expertise, time, equipment, budget) available
■ Present a critical review of the literature related to the specific topic.
■ Select appropriate research methods to gather data, and to analyse that data using appropriate techniques to address the questions.
■ Interpret and report results and/or findings.
■ Critically discuss the findings of the study in relation to previous research and identify the contribution it makes to current knowledge and the implications for practice and future work.
■ Present research or project findings to peers in a concise and critical manner, for example by abstract or poster presentation.
Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits
Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
