Short Description

This compulsory core course of the M Ed ELT offers an overview of key theories of language learning and the related teaching methodologies. Students carry out practical tasks based on classroom observation to relate underlying theory to classroom applications to teach language skills in a particular context.

Timetable

Class sessions - 2 hours per week, 12 weeks, including final formative presentation for assessment
I tutorial

Up to 10 hours additional practice teaching, 2 hours a week (optional)
Completion of online tasks throughout the semester

Assessment

The assessment has two parts


Part a) An observation based case study of teaching-in-action, including classroom observation and discussion. 1,250 words (30%)

 

Part b) A lesson planning project, including theoretical discussion and applications to lesson design. 2,750 words (70%)

Course Aims

The aim of this course is to provide participants with the skills and knowledge to enable them to relate current theories of how language is learned to practical classroom applications.  

Specifically it aims to:

■ to familiarise students with current theories of how language is learned

■ to enable students to relate these theories to their own practice

■ to enable students to critically evaluate tools and modes for teaching language

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of the course students will be able to:

■ describe and identify theoretical principles and concepts in relation to practical classroom applications

■ apply concepts and theories for planning and teaching language skills and language systems lesson.

■ critically evaluate the relation between learning theory, teaching methodology and materials selection

■ critically reflect on their own practice and that of others

■ relate theories to their own practice and teaching context
