Short Description
Principles of Public Health provides a foundation for students to critically engage with the discipline of Public Health. The course introduces students to essential concepts and theories linked to health and illness, including an exploration of the determinants of health, health improvement, and disease prevention. Relevant current examples are used to provide students with an up-to-date knowledge of public health in a contemporary era.

Course Aims
The course aims to provide a foundation in public health for students. It will introduce students to the fundamental concepts of health and illness and the factors that influence health in different settings.
Intended Learning Outcomes of Course
By the end of this course students will be able to:
1. Critically discuss the key concepts, ideas, and controversies within public health.
2. Evaluate the complex relationship between population and individual perspectives of health, using peer-reviewed literature.
3. Debate the concepts around the distribution of health and illness which public health seeks to address and evaluate the factors which shape this distribution.
4. Critically assess what is being done and what could be done, to address health problems at population level with reference to literature.
Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits
Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
