Short Description

This course focuses more on the behavioural science underpinning Positive Behaviour Support. Students will learn about different behavioural strategies which require a greater level of expertise and in-depth understanding. This will include how to use time sampling as part of behavioural assessment, the use of reinforcement to change behaviours, and the structured approaches to teaching new skills.

Assessment

Podcast: (5 minutes, 40%, ILO 1).

Practical Skills Assessment: develop a behavioural intervention plan for a person with intellectual disabilities and implement this in practice; write a report on the outcomes of this (60%, ILO 2-4).

Course Aims

The aims of this course are for students to gain in-depth knowledge about advanced behavioural strategies, including a conceptual understanding of the science underpinning Positive Behaviour Support. Students will build on their learning from the PgCert in Positive Behaviour Support and will extend their understanding of a range of Positive Behaviour Support strategies for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and behavioural challenges.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course, the students will be able to:

1. Critically discuss the importance of ethics within a PBS approach.

2. Critically appraise the research evidence for a specific behavioural intervention with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and challenging behaviours.

3. Apply knowledge and understanding to inform the development of a person-specific behavioural intervention.

4. Application of appropriate data use and effective communications within a PBS approach. 

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
