Acquisition and integration of a knowledge base to understand the aetiology and pathogenesis of oral diseases and their systemic consequences.

Students will submit a 2000 word research portfolio for either a clinical study or a pre-clinical animal study (50%) The criteria for the protocol are as follows:

■ The protocol will investigate periodontal disease and its association with a systemic condition of your choosing (either rheumatoid arthritis, cardiovascular disease or diabetes ILO 1).

■ The protocol will include a background narrative review demonstrating critical appraisal of recent literature and current evidence relating to the association between periodontitis and the specified systemic condition (ILO2).

■ The protocol will aim to identify evidence based targets for treatment and/or clinical trials to test interventions (ILO3).

Students will deliver an oral presentation of their research protocol, which will take the format of a grant review panel (50%).

Acquisition and integration of knowledge with regard to the aetiology and pathogenesis of oral disease and their impact on systemic diseases using periodontitis as an exemplar. Understand the basic science behind the clinical outcomes of these conditions; including the causes and mechanisms of disease progression and identification of potential therapeutic targets for treatment.

By the end of this course students will be able to critique and evaluate:

1. the aetiology and pathogenesis of periodontal disease and its links to systemic conditions:

2. Critique and evaluate recent advancements in evidence related to periodontitis and its systemic consequences - and gaps in our understanding

3. Evidence based targets for treatment of periodontal disease and clinical trials to test interventions

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
