The course deepens students' understanding of current discourses in musicology, allowing them to assess and discuss recent influential contributions in a number of different sub-fields and from a variety of approaches.

The course aims to provide students with intensive exposure to current approaches and methods in musicology and its various sub-disciplines. It is taught within a subject area with leading figures from a broad range of approaches and it reflects this diversity and vibrancy. More specifically, the course aims to:

■ deepen students' understanding of current directions within several sub-fields in Musicology, as evidenced in relevant publications

■ enhance their ability of and confidence in using specialist theoretical and methodological approaches

■ enable students to contribute to discourses in the discipline and to discussions on musical matters in wider public life

■ improve students' analytical, writing and presentation skills in the context of researching Music at postgraduate level

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ contribute to current debates in the field and to discussions on musical matters in wider public life orally and in writing

■ engage with chosen specialist theoretical and methodological approaches in the discipline

■ critically contextualise their own work in relation to specialist theoretical and methodological approaches in the discipline

■ write scholarly essays according to professional academic standards

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
