Short Description

Consideration and analysis of museum teaching and learning programmes and curricula design that respond to equality legislation and in increasingly multicultural and international contexts.

This course will be delivered via lecture style inputs which will take place on a series of Saturdays in Kelvin Hall teaching suite.

Assessment

Essay based on understanding of challenges to intellectual and physical access to museum collections and space, underpinned by a critical knowledge of understanding research, theory and policy. Knowledge and understanding of strategies that will be employed to address these challenges (e.g. technology) must be evidenced and should also be related to the promotion of accommodating cultural inclusivity in and through museum education.

Course Aims

This course aims to extend knowledge of theoretical and practical issues that underpin inclusive practices in relation to learning in and through the museum. Participant and audience diversity will be examined in light of current and emerging policy locally, nationally and globally.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

 

LO1 Critically analyse the factors that contribute to enabling intellectual and physical access in and through the museum for a range of individual needs.

 

LO2 Design and deliver original and creative responses that address inclusive challenges using new technologies/ new media within the context of museum education.

 

LO3 Synthesise relevant policy and practice in relation to inclusive education in the museum.

 

LO4 Critically reflect on own responsibility and responsibility of others to create opportunities for accessing own and other cultures/identity through museum education.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
