Body Systems Measurement and Imaging MED5305

  • Academic Session: 2024-25
  • School: School of Medicine Dentistry and Nursing
  • Credits: 30
  • Level: Level 5 (SCQF level 11)
  • Typically Offered: Runs Throughout Semesters 1 and 2
  • Available to Visiting Students: No
  • Collaborative Online International Learning: No

Short Description

Teaching on the anatomy and physiology of the major body systems. Investigation of these systems using modern imaging and clinical measurement.

Timetable

1-2 days of lectures per week over semesters one and two

Assessment

Assessment

The course shall be assessed in 3 blocks:

1. anatomy and physiology will be assessed by a written exam - contributing 33% to the total course grade

2. clinical measurement will be assessed by a written exam - contributing 34% to the total course grade

3. Clinical imaging will be assessed by a written exam  (22% to the total course grade),  and 2 pieces of course work (11% of the total course grade).

Reassessment

In accordance with the University's Code of Assessment reassessments are normally set for all courses which do not contribute to the honours classifications. For non honours courses, students are offered reassessment in all or any of the components of assessment if the satisfactory (threshold) grade for the overall course is not achieved at the first attempt. This is normally grade D3 for undergraduate students, and grade C3 for postgraduate students. Exceptionally it may not be possible to offer reassessment of some coursework items, in which case the mark achieved at the first attempt will be counted towards the final course grade. Any such exceptions are listed below in this box.

Main Assessment In: December and April/May

Course Aims

This course aims to:

■ provide students with detailed knowledge of the principal body systems investigated by medical physics

■ explore in detail the principal imaging modalities used in the investigation and diagnosis of dysfunction of body systems

■ deliver detailed analysis of the clinical measurements used in the investigation and diagnosis of dysfunction of body systems

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able, with reference to the evidence and guidelines, to:

■ critically appraise modern imaging modalities in the investigation of dysfunctional body systems

■ demonstrate an extensive detailed and critical knowledge of clinical measurement techniques

■ with respect to the literature and guidelines, undertake critical evaluations of the safety of techniques that use ionising radiation

■ use a range of specialised skills, techniques and practices at the forefront of clinical imaging and measurement

■ undertake critical evaluations of a wide range of numerical and image related data
