Short Description

Managers depend on other people to get things done. For this reason, they need to be able to understand themselves and others' individual differences, how to motivate and influence individuals and groups, to manage and respond to uncertainty and change, in order to contribute effectively to the organisation.

Timetable

This course will be delivered through a series of guided reading, lectures, self-assessment exercises and case study tutorials in semester one.

Assessment

This course will be assessed by means of 3 multiple choice tests (20%), reflective portfolio involving a number of self-insight questionnaires (40%), and group-based oral presentation and assessment (40%). The latter will have group input into the individuals mark reflecting their contribution.   

Course Aims

This course aims to explore the impact that individuals, groups, and structures can have on behaviours within an organisation. It will offer detailed understanding of the individual student, people at work, and how such knowledge can help organisations improve the quality, productivity and sustainability for both worker and the organisation.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

1. Understand the relevance of individual differences, including cognitive and physical differences, for employee behaviours and organisational performance and outcomes.

2. Assess their own strengths and development needs as a future global leader using a range of self-assessment and reflection resources.

3. Explain the significance of diversity to organisational outcomes,

4. Compare different theories of motivation and their implications for employee job engagement and application for work performance.

5. Explain the significance of group behaviour and identify the strengths and limitations of teams for organisations.

6. Contrast power and leadership and the causes and consequences of power abuse for individuals and organisations.

7. To understand the significance of culture in organisations, & examine approaches to managing change in and for organisations

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
