Organisations are legally obliged to look after the health, safety and welfare of employees in the workplace. During this course, students will be introduced to fundamental aspects of health and safety in the laboratory environment, including: relevant legislation; procedures that are used to assess the risks associated with working practices; and measures which are employed relating to accidents/incidents which occur in the laboratory.

This course is comprised of online lectures and tutorials which will take place during semester 2.

The aim of this course is to:

1. Provide students with an in-depth knowledge and critical understanding of health and safety legislation.

2. Provide students with the opportunity to perform a risk assessment for a laboratory-based procedure.

3. Equip students with essential knowledge and critical understanding of appropriate procedures to follow in the event of an incident/accident occurring in the laboratory environment.

By the end of this course students will be able to:

1. Interpret and effectively implement health and safety legislation

2. Identify and critically evaluate health and safety risks associated with working practices in the laboratory

3. Critically evaluate the need for and subsequently apply the principles of risk assessment.

4. Critically evaluate procedures associated with taking action, investigating, and reporting of accidents/incidents in the laboratory.

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
