This multidisciplinary course introduces health and social care professionals to the knowledge and skills of spiritual and religious care. It is a core course for those seeking to enter the profession of health and social care chaplaincy.

Semester 1 mix of study days and e learning supported by Moodle

Co-requisite for specialism in Health and Social Care Chaplaincy.

Students will submit a 2,500 word critical reflection of spiritual and religious assessment and care. * To identify and practice the processes and resources used to provide spiritual and religious care.
* To develop an in-depth understanding of assessing and meeting spiritual and religious need
* To facilitate students' communication skills and evidence their reflective practice.
* To enable students to contribute to and engage in current debates in spiritual and religious care* To provide a thorough grounding in the principles of spiritual and religious care

By the end of the course the students will be able to:
* Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of the main world faith and belief groups and the implications for healthcare services.
* Critically appraise the evidence base and assessment methods for identifying spiritual and religious needs.
* Critically evaluate standards, protocols, documentation used to facilitate spiritual care and religious care.
* Critically evaluate the communication skills used in pastoral encounters and the practitioners individual strengths and weaknesses.
* Discuss and appraise the models of reflective practice used by healthcare professionals.

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
