Short Description

This course will provide students with a critical understanding of the basis and practice for quality improvement in clinical and other settings, and examine its associated role in research allied to medicine.

The course will be delivered over a five week block made up of seminars/tutorials each week.

Assessment

Critical Literature Review 100%

The student will be asked to provide an evidence-based report on the themes and content discussed throughout the course (1000/1500 words). This will be based on data provided from hypothetical clinical scenarios.

Course Aims

This course aims to provide students with a critical understanding of the principles and mechanisms for carrying out quality improvement projects in health care, contrasting this to applied clinical research.

 

The course also aims to develop the students' proficiency in the analysis and critical evaluation of quality improvement and audit data, interpret findings and draw conclusions about the need for change.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ Critically discuss the need for and use of the quality improvement process in different practice and research scenarios.

■ Plan, execute and analyse an audit

■ Critically discuss the findings from audit and prepare an evidence based report.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
