Short Description

The course facilitates the acquisition and integration of a knowledge base to provide the student with academic knowledge and clinical skills to enable her/him to diagnose endodontic problems and to provide appropriate treatment to endodontic patients. During the course, students will be asked to demonstrate a range of clinical and technical skills pertinent to the provision of root canal treatment.

Timetable

Teaching will consist of endodontic pre-clinical/ clinical treatment sessions, research/ audit sessions, didactic teaching seminars, critical reading seminars and endodontic diagnostic clinic sessions.

3,000 word assignment essay (50%)

Course Aims

To provide the academic knowledge and clinical skills to:

 

■ enable the student to clearly identify the rationale for the use of materials, instruments and medicaments in undertaking root canal treatment

 

■ enable the student to provide non-complex endodontic treatment for adult patients with compromised dentitions

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course, students will be able to critically analyse and: 

 

■ undertake a detailed patient assessment in the adult dentition

 

■ select the appropriate materials used in root canal treatment procedures

 

■ critically appraise technological techniques required for root canal treatments

 

■ demonstrate knowledge in the principles of care of the adult dentition and alveolar bone

 

■ demonstrate competence in formulating appropriate treatment plans for patients requiring root canal treatment

 

■ demonstrate a critical understanding in applying the appropriate clinical endodontic procedures

 

■ clinically and theoretically demonstrate understanding in the principles and importance of treatment planning in a range of clinical conditions

 

■ demonstrate critical awareness of the necessity for 'whole patient care' in patients with endodontic problems

 

■ demonstrate a critical awareness in procedures to access and disinfect root canals

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
