Short Description

This course prepares students for learning and teaching in the secondary classroom.

Timetable

Secondary students spend 18 weeks of the academic session at University. Curriculum, Pedagogies and Practice in The Secondary classes are timetabled in non-placement weeks.

Assessment

The assessment for this course will be dependent on the nature of the chosen curricular/ subject area. For example, it could take the form of a presentation to peers & tutors/ or an essay/or a video or film or a report/ or a teaching unit. In each, the assessment should be equivalent to 4000 words and should contain a critically reflective component. The form of assessment will enable students to address the ILOs and relevant aspects of the SPR. Subject areas will cross moderate assessment design to ensure consistency.

Course Aims

This course aims for students to:

 

■ Develop as engaged, reflective, empowered and enquiring teachers for children and young people aged 3-18 in accordance with the criteria articulated in The Standard for Provisional Registration (GTCS, August 2021).

■ Establish critical understandings of current curriculum, policy and practice.

■ Develop an understanding of their role in constructing effective teaching, learning, assessment and evaluation that enables all children and young people to learn.

■ Develop understanding of the content and structure of the curriculum area/areas relevant to their practice, including understanding of age-appropriate pedagogies and pedagogic content knowledge.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

■ Demonstrate a critical understanding of curriculum, policy and practice guidelines.

■ Demonstrate an understanding of how to create engaging, inclusive and effective curricular content that supports pupil learning.

■ Demonstrate a critical awareness of a range of approaches to teaching.

■ Demonstrate theoretical and practical understandings of the relationship between teaching and learning in and through their subject area(s).
