This course considers the impact of drug and alcohol misuse on children and families by reviewing the complex issues involved in this topic and exploring the evidence for interventions and responses.

Once a week evening class for 11 weeks

Assessment will be through coursework which could include essay, class presentation and group work, amounting to 4000 words in total.

Provide students with critical analysis of the impact of drug and alcohol misuse on child and family functioning.

Explore the policy and legislative implications of drug and alcohol misuse for children and families.

Consider the key issues in best practice when analysing interventions for children and families affected by drug and alcohol misuse.

By the end of this course students will be able to:

Critically analyse and assess the research evidence on the impact of drug and alcohol misuse on children and families.

Critically evaluate and appraise the current interventions applied to work with children and families affected by drug and alcohol misuse.

Illustrate knowledge and understanding of the interface between drug and alcohol misuse, mental health issues and domestic violence, and its impact on the safeguarding and welfare of children growing up in drug and alcohol misusing households.

Critically appraise the impact of early intervention for children and families affected by drug and alcohol misuse

Critically review and illustrate knowledge of the policy and legislative context of drug and alcohol misuse with particular relevance to children and families.
