Short Description

The course is organised in a seminar format, involving both workshop activities, and short student poster presentations. Students present an evidence-based argument for a position on an educational issue, with others in the group provide peer feedback through critical questioning. This course supports learning in relation to research, critical thinking, communication and employability.

Assessment

Written assignment, in the form of a 4000-word academic article. 100% of the final mark will be based on this assignment.

 

Course Aims

The course aims to give students the opportunity to develop their understanding of educational issues by reviewing literature, developing a position by weighing evidence and argument, and defending this position both orally and in writing.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of the course, students are expected to have demonstrated the ability to:

1. Access, select and critically evaluate academic literature on an educational issue
2. Identify an issue within the educational sphere, and construct an academic argument to justify discussion of this issue

3. Weigh and synthesise arguments in the literature to develop a position statement

4. Evaluate and use evidence and argument to support or refute relevant arguments

5. Present their position via a poster presentation and in writing

6. Respond to questions and counter arguments
7. Contribute to group discussion and peer feedback
