This course involves completion of a research project in a chosen field of ecology and environmental biology.

Assessment

The student is assessed by an 8000 word written report (70%), supervisor skills assessment (15%) and a scientific poster (15%).

The aims of the course are to:

Develop appropriate and competent analytical, laboratory or field research skills

Provide the opportunity of collecting high-quality data or undertaking advanced data analysis or modelling

Undertake statistical analysis and/or modelling that addresses the chosen research questions and hypotheses

Give experience in writing a scientific paper and presenting a conference poster

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

1. Undertake original research on chosen topics in ecology and environmental biology

2. Demonstrate in-depth acquisition of skills in advanced research techniques

3. Safely execute laboratory or field experiments

4. Critically evaluate and analyse quantitative data to answer research questions and test hypotheses

5. Identify, synthesise, summarise and critically evaluate prior research findings in a specific area

6. Identify areas where further research is necessary

7. Effectively communicate findings to relevant stakeholders in an appropriate style and format

8. Demonstrate proficiency in planning and managing time effectively by prioritising tasks and meeting deadlines

9. Work cooperatively with supervisor and colleagues to develop interpersonal and teamwork skills.

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
