Short Description

This course involves critical review of literature and design of a research project in a chosen field of ecology and environmental biology.

Assessment

The student is assessed by an 8000 word written report (80%) and a seminar talk (20%). 

Course Aims

The aims of the course are to: introduce you to the formulation and planning of a research project through development of skills in critical review of literature, design of a research project, preliminary analysis of pilot data,

experience in giving a seminar talk and writing a research report.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

 

1. Critically review the literature relevant to the chosen research topic using appropriate bibliographic searches

2. Formulate appropriate research questions and testable hypotheses relevant to a chosen research project

3. Design and plan safe laboratory or field experiments

4. Collect and/or analyse pilot data that will inform research project design

5. Effectively communicate findings to relevant stakeholders in an appropriate style and format

6. Demonstrate proficiency in planning and managing time effectively by prioritising tasks and meeting deadlines

7. Work co-operatively with supervisor and colleagues to develop interpersonal and teamwork skills

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
