Short Description

This course aims to explore the creative and practical aspects of text creation and the craft of writing through intensive close reading of literary texts, and through writing practice. It provides students with the opportunity to practise a range of literary techniques and ideas as manifested in a number of outstanding modern and contemporary writers, and to develop a critical idiom and practice through which they can analyse their own writing.

Course Aims

This course aims to:

■ Enable students to explore the creative and practical aspects of text creation through intensive close reading of literary texts, and through writing practice;

■ Enable students to apply a range of literary techniques and ideas, as manifested in a number of outstanding modern and contemporary writers, and to develop a critical idiom through which they can analyse their own writing;

■ Provide students with advanced critical reading and analytical skills through discussions, close readings and submitted writing exercises.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ Examine and read texts closely and analytically with a view to understanding the method of their composition;

■ Critically evaluate and discuss the merit of literary experimentation across forms, genres and themes;

■ Contextualise and apply a wide range of literary craft and techniques in their own writing.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
