  • Academic Session: 2024-25
  • School: School of Cardiovascular and Metabolic
  • Credits: 10
  • Level: Level 5 (SCQF level 11)
  • Typically Offered: Semester 2
  • Available to Visiting Students: No
  • Collaborative Online International Learning: No

Short Description

This course will provide an overview of imaging techniques and applications within the context of clinical diagnostic radiology and biomedical research. The focus will be on principal clinical imaging modalities (MRI and CT).

Timetable

This course is made up of lectures, tutorials and seminars taking place in semester 2.

Excluded Courses

Assessment

Summative assessment will be based on an individual oral presentation. Topic of the presentation will be chosen from a pool of selected journal articles, covering a range of course topics.

Course Aims

The course will provide an introduction to clinical imaging modalities and describe the role of imaging in biomedical research, in understanding pathophysiology and aetiology of diseases, uncovering therapeutic pathways, and monitoring the effects of treatment. The course will include the description of underlying physical principles underpinning clinical imaging modalities and emphasise the links between image properties and underlying anatomy and physiology. Furthermore, the principles of quantitative imaging and its uses in biomedical research will be introduced.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:-

1) demonstrate an in depth knowledge of the basic principles of clinical diagnostic imaging;

2) evaluate the role of imaging in clinical diagnostics of cardiovascular diseases;

3) critically assess the role of cardiovascular imaging in translational research.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
