Short Description
This course covers a range of issues central to research and practice in clinical neuropsychology. These include advanced statistical methods including power analysis, meta-analysis and statistical analysis of single case experimental designs. Other practice related topics covered include the assessment of effort in neuropsychological assessment, theory, assessment and treatment of functional neurological symptoms, principles of neuropsychological rehabilitation, goal setting, assessment of capacity, and the neuropsychology of intellectual difficulty. Each topic is illustrated with examples from practice in clinical neuropsychology.

Course Aims
To develop knowledge and skills in advanced statistical methods including power analysis, meta-analysis and statistical analysis of single case experimental designs.
To develop specialist knowledge of a range of topics relevant to professional practice in clinical neuropsycyholgy including the assessment of effort in neuropsychological assessment, theory, assessment and treatment of functional neurological symptoms, principles of neuropsychological rehabilitation, goal setting, assessment of capacity, and the neuropsychology of intellectual difficulty.
Intended Learning Outcomes of Course
To be able to demonstrate:
An understanding of the concept of statistical power and its relevance to critically appraising research and how it used in the conduct of psychological research.
How to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of published research
An understanding, and critical appraisal, of single case experimental design methodololgy
Knowledge of how to assess effort in a neuropsychological assessment
Knowledge of the underpinning principles of neuropsychological rehabilitation
Knowledge and critical appraisal of contemporary theories, assessment and treatment methods for functional neurological symptoms.
An understanding of the concept of mental capacity and how this is assessed in a legal context
An understanding, and critical appraisal of, current use of neuropsychological methods with people who have an intellectual disability.
Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits
Students must pass the examination.
