Short Description
This course explores local and global campaigns and social movements, examining how social justice theories underpin collective action within communities.

Assessment
Assignment 1 (25%):
Students will write an 800-word blog, in which they discuss ways in which the organisation works towards social justice, and the extent to which their approach can be deemed as success.
Assignment 2 (75%)
Students will create a Social Change Campaign, broadly interpreted, equivalent to 3,000 words. Their campaign should include an approximately 1,000 word "campaign rationale" that explains the issue/opportunity being addressed, the values guiding the plan, and the theories being drawn upon for the campaign. Students are encouraged to be creative and may use/create posters, a website, social media posts/schedules, photo arrays, music, art, processes/methods of convening, or other methods they want to utilize to affect social change. Their "campaign rationale" should communicate how the various elements of the plan fit together to engage in the work of social change.

The course aims are:
To critically examine theories of social justice and injustice within local and global contexts
To identity approaches to campaigning and collective action that seek to address social injustice and inequalities
Intended Learning Outcomes of Course
By the end of this course students will be able to:
LO1: Define and understand competing theoretical perspectives on the concept of social justice
LO2: Analyse key components of campaigning and collective action that seeks to tackle social injustice
LO3: Critique community learning and development practice, in both local and global settings, that seeks to tackle social injustice
LO4: Identify relevant approaches to tackle social injustice within community contexts
Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits
Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
