Visas

If you need a visa to come to Portugal, you should contact your nearest embassy or consulate as soon as you get your admission and scholarship letter. Depending on where you live, you may need to go to another country to apply for your visa.

You will need to apply for a temporary visa for stay, Type D. This is usually issued for 365 days and allows multiple entries into Portuguese territory.

Some embassies can take more than three months to process visa applications. It is very important that you prepare your documents exactly how the embassy or consulate asks you to. This will help to avoid any delays.

As soon as you have applied for your visa, you must tell both the MAGMa coordinator and the Iscte International Relations team when and where you applied.

If you have any issues with getting your visa on time, you must contact:

  • the embassy where you applied
  • the MAGMa coordinator
  • Iscte

If you arrive in Portugal with a valid visa or permit from another EU member state, you can apply for a residence permit in Portugal. However, we do not recommend this because of the current lengthy delays in issuing the documents. These are likely to continue for the foreseeable future.

You can find more information about visas on the Portuguese Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum (AIMA) website.
