Erasmus + Master Degree Loans

Erasmus + Master Degree Loans are EU-guaranteed loans with favourable pay-back terms that can help you finance a Master course in an Erasmus+ Programme country.

Currently the scheme is available through universities and banks in Spain, France, UK and Turkey for outgoing students from these countries pursuing postgraduate study abroad and students from other Programme countries going to Spain, France, Luxembourg or UK for a Master course. The loan is to help Masters students with their living and tuition costs when studying in a country other than where they live or where they took their first degree.

The scheme is managed by the European Investment Fund (EIF), which publishes details of participating banks, student loan agencies, and other organisations. More information on the management of the Master Loan and how to apply is on the European Commission's Erasmus+ Master Degree Loan webpage.

SAAS Postgraduate tuition fee loan

Eligible British and EU nationals may also be able to apply for a SAAS Postgraduate tuition fee loan. The funding available is a loan to help you pay some of your tuition fees, up to a maximum of £5,500 for full-time courses. Further details on eligibility and how to apply can be found here

SAAS Postgraduate living cost loan

Eligible full-time postgraduate students can apply to SAAS for a living-cost loan up to £4,500. To be eligible for the living-cost loan, in addition to meeting the eligibility conditions, you must:

  • be under 60 on the first day of the first academic year of your course (normally 1 August). If you change course and are aged 60 or over on the relevant date of your second course, you will not be entitled to a student loan for your second course.

You can find information about repaying your student loan here.

The living-cost loan is not available to part-time postgraduate students or EU nationals coming to Scotland to study.

Professional and Career Development Loans

British citizens may be eligible for a Professional and Career Development Loan which is a bank loan that can be used to pay for courses and training that help with your career or help get you into work.  Loans are usually offered at a reduced interest rate and the government pays interest while you’re studying.
