I previously obtained my BSc Hons in Biomedical Science and my MSc in Experimental Medicine from Queen's University Belfast. My previous research experience elucidated my passion for microbiological research to uncover the mechanisms underpinning interactions at the host-pathogen interface. I continue to explore these dynamic interactions but with a new focus on eukaryotic pathogens as well as prokaryotic. My project is titled The Subversion of Nutritional Immunity by Intracellular Pathogens, where I investigate the role of copper during the innate immune response. Through the NorthWestBio programme, my PhD is split between two institutes (University of Glasgow and Queen's University Belfast) which allows me to study this response using two intracellular pathogens - the parasite Toxoplasma gondii, and the bacterium Legionella pneumophila.
Outside of the lab, I'm a huge animal lover, a proud mother to two cats and three chaotic dogs. When I don't have my hands full with them, I love gaming and art. I'm currently attempting to learn how to crochet, which has been less than successful so far. Perhaps by the end of the PhD I'll have mastered it!
