Mike Holder
I am a GP, currently working out-of-hours in NHS Lothian and as an Academic Fellow in GP at the University of Edinburgh. I initially trained at the University of Aberdeen, obtaining my medical degree (MBChB) in 2014. I completed my foundation years and started my GP training in West Yorkshire. In 2020 I transferred to Forth Valley to continue my GP training, which I completed in August 2022, before starting my fellowship.
I took a year out of GP training in 2019 to undertake a Master's in Medical Sciences by Research (MMedSci) at the University of Edinburgh. Working alongside the ePrescribing Optimisation team, I developed a project investigating prescribers’ experience with interoperable ePrescribing software at the interface between primary and secondary care. Unfortunately, in March 2020, I was unable to continue this project due to the COVID-19 pandemic. I instead undertook a rapid review of medications thought to be harmful in SARS-CoV-2 infections and graduated with distinction the same year.
During my fellowship I have primarily been researching trial applicability, both in clinical trials of aspirin for the primary prevention of cardiovascular disease, and in the form of a systematic review of studies comparing differences between trial-eligible and trial-ineligible. I will continue my work on trial applicability throughout my Multimorbidity PhD Fellowship at the University of Dundee, working with population datasets to establish how relevant guidelines are to people with multimorbidity.
Project: Applicability of hypertension treatment recommendations for the prevention and management of multimorbidity in people with health inequalities
Primary Supervisor: Dr Daniel Morales
Secondary Supervisors: Dr Chris Cole , Prof Isla Mackenzie and Prof Bruce Guthrie.
