Research title: Pronouncing Early Modern English and Scots: Reassessing the evidence for ‘non-standard’ speech in Early Modern Britain.
Research Summary
My PhD research focuses on pronunciations in Britain outside of London. Scholarship on the pronunciation of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century English largely focuses on the emerging 'standard': educated London-based speech. My project shifts away from the London-centric approach to examine Welsh English, Northern English, and Scots pronunciation in the Early Modern period, using the work of early writers on the English language as evidence.
