Research title: Novel nano-sensor for multiplexed and rapid identification of pathogens using an artificial tongue platform

Research Summary

Mirinal Kumar Rayappa completed his Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) at the National Institute of Food Technology Entrepreneurship & Management (NIFTEM-K, INI Status), Govt of India. He worked with Dr. P. Murali Krishna as a research assistant in the chemical & materials physics group on nanomaterial synthesis (transition metals), its characterization techniques, self-assembly of organic ligands onto the inorganic nanoparticle surfaces, and its use for chemical sensing applications with simple UV-Visible Absorption Spectroscopy.

During this time, he was awarded the Indian Academy of Science Summer Research Fellowship at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre where he worked with Dr. S. Jamdar on the effects of gamma irradiation on the functionality of organic molecules and as a food preservation method. He was also a visiting research fellow at the  Dr. Marianne Ellis lab, University of Bath where he worked on developing chemically defined, serum-reduced media and their effect on mammalian muscle cell growth and expanding its scope for cultured meat production.

Post these research stints, he pursued a Master of Research (M.Res) in Bioengineering at Imperial College London within Dr. Firat Güder's intelligent interface research group on developing chemical paper-based electric gas sensor for detecting ammonia gas and its biomedical/agro applications at the junction of analytical chemistry, material science, and computing.

Mirinal is currently pursuing doctorate studies (PhD in Biomedical Engineering candidature) within Prof. Alasdair Clark's nanophotonics device group investigating

1. The potential of multiplexed sensing capability of 'optical artificial tongue like nanoplasmonic chip-machine interface'

2. Exploring the chemical fingerprinting profile of this nanoplasmonic device in liquids using self-assembled chemical moieties on metamaterial surfaces targeting various industrial analytical problems.

His research interests include analytical optoelectric nano/micro device development, soft material and bio-inorganic chemistry and R&D industrial applications.
