Research title: Exploration of variation in disease phenotype in equid trypanosomiasis
Research Summary
Over the last decade I have forged a career as a veterinary academic clinician. My clinical interests are particularly in preventative health medicine, infectious diseases and evidence based veterinary medicine including evidence synthesis and the development of practical clinical protocols and audit. Working equid medicine is an area of specific interest to me and I have benefitted from periods working in North and West Africa building clinical and research expertise.
I am interested in animal health systems in lower income countries and how sustainable improvements can be supported.
For my PhD I have used systems thinking to define the problem around equid trypanosomiasis in Gambia. To identify knowledge gaps I have used systematic review methodology to synthesise the evidence around key clinical questions. I have used field studies in Gambia of equids with naturally occurring infections of trypanosomiasis to study the disease. I have looked at how the host immune response varies with severity of disease (using transcriptomics) and assessed whether asymptomatic or subclinical disease exists which could contribute to the disease epidemiology (using PICO methodology and a post mortem study).
I am a Diplomate of the European College of Equine Internal Medicine (2016) and RCVS Specialist in Equine Internal Medicine.
I have been associate editor of Equine Veterinary Education since 2019.
