Five UofG social science academics have been elected as Fellows of the Academy of Social Sciences.

Professor Morag Treanor, Professor Anne Kerr, Professor Eleanor Shaw OBE, Professor Irene-Marie Esser and Honorary Professor Ken Thomson join an outstanding international community of leading social sciences and humanities researchers.

Spanning a range of research and practice areas including health inequalities, the gender wage gap, European cybersecurity governance, AI and big data analytics, and the anthropology of Britain, the 64 newly elected Fellows highlight the importance, breadth and relevance of the social sciences to understanding and tackling the varied challenges facing society today.

As well as excellence in research and professional use of social science, the Fellows have also made significant contributions beyond the academy, including to industry, policy and higher education. 

Professor Anne Kerr is Professor of Science and Technology Studies and Head of the School of Social and Political Sciences. She said: “The social sciences have an important role to play in championing public involvement in decision making about science and health and I am very pleased to be able to play my part in promoting this through the Academy.”

Professor Eleanor Shaw, Head of Adam Smith Business School, said: “I am delighted to have been accepted as a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences. I feel very honoured to be joining many others, including University of Glasgow colleagues, in becoming part of this important community. Social Science has never been more important to helping us to understand and navigate the challenges and problems we face in an increasingly complex world. To have the opportunity to work with colleagues across social science disciplines and with other subject areas to contribute to the solutions that will make our world a better place is truly an honour.”

Professor Morag Treanor is a leading specialist in interrogating data to expose how child poverty is caused and how it might be eased. She said: “I am over the moon to have been appointed as a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences. I'm really proud to join the ranks of such esteemed colleagues and look forward to contributing to its excellent work."

Professor of Corporate Law and Governance, Irene-marie Esser, said: “It is an honour to be elected as a Fellow at the Academy of Social Sciences. Through my work as a legal academic, I will strive to deliver on the mission of the Academy by enhancing the social sciences in research, professional practice, and education. I look forward to contributing to the strategic direction of Social Sciences and its importance in the world today.”

Professor Sara Carter, Head of the College of Social Sciences, said: “The Academy of Social Sciences champions the vital role of social sciences in understanding people, society and the economy in today’s world. I am delighted to see more of our academics appointed to this prestigious body of social science researchers, teachers and practitioner.”

The Academy’s Fellowship comprises 1,600 leading social scientists from academia, the public, private and third sectors.
