Professor Patricia (Pat) Monaghan, Regius Professor of Zoology in the School of Biodiversity, One Health & Veterinary Medicine has been elected to the Fellowship of the Royal Society, the UK’s national academy of sciences.

The oldest scientific academy in continuous existence, the Royal Society elects exceptional researchers from around the world as Fellows, based on their invaluable contributions to science.

Professor Pat Monaghan is an evolutionary ecologist whose research centres on the ecology, life histories and rates of ageing of vertebrates. Professor Monaghan is a world-leader in her field, particularly focusing on the lifelong consequences of variations in the environmental conditions experienced early in life. Her work combines studies of individuals and populations with research into the underlying mechanisms at the physiological and cellular levels. This includes understanding the effects of stress exposure, growth rate and parental age on lifespan, linking this to changes in stress responsiveness, energy production and the rate of deterioration of the body. Professor Monaghan also has a long-standing interest in species conservation.

Professor Pat Monaghan said: “I feel very honoured indeed to have been elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. I am extremely fortunate to work with many talented colleagues and early career researchers, and this is a tribute to them as much as to me.

“The University of Glasgow, and its staff at all levels, have supported me in many ways, for which I am extremely grateful.”

Professor Iain McInnes, Vice Principal and Head of the College of Medical, Veterinary & Life Sciences, said: “I am delighted to congratulate Professor Monaghan on her election to the Fellowship of the Royal Society. This is an exceptional accomplishment and demonstrates the immense contribution that Pat has made to her field of research.

“In becoming a Fellow of the Royal Society, Pat joins an illustrious group, testament to her curiosity, intellect and remarkable energy. Her success is reflective of the broad and exciting research ongoing in the University, and in the College of MVLS.”

Sir Adrian Smith, President of the Royal Society, said: “I am pleased to welcome such an outstanding group into the Fellowship of the Royal Society.

“This new cohort have already made significant contributions to our understanding of the world around us and continue to push the boundaries of possibility in academic research and industry.”
