Richard Lochhead MSP, Minister for Further Education, Higher Education and Science, visited the University of Glasgow’s School of Interdisciplinary Studies on Wednesday 4 September 2019. The School is located on the Crichton campus in Dumfries

 

 

Head of School and Director of the University of Glasgow’s Dumfries Campus, Professor Carol Hill, welcomed the Minister to the Rutherford-McCowan Building and gave an overview of the work done by the students and academic staff and of future plans for growth.

 

Professor Hill said:  “It was both a pleasure and privilege to welcome the Minister to the School of Interdisciplinary Studies on Wednesday, and to let him see at first-hand how much has been achieved in the past 20 years.

 

“When we opened our doors in 1999, we had just a handful of students, six staff and a small suite of Liberal Arts programmes. Now, over 400 students engage in the full spectrum of Higher Education opportunities including undergraduate, postgraduate and research degrees at the University’s School of Interdisciplinary Studies.

 

 

“Its highly respected team of more than 40 academics undertake world-leading research across a broad range of specialisms from environment, culture and tourism to resilience, sustainability and end of life studies and we have exciting plans for the future.

 

“This School is going from strength to strength and our vision to create a world class, research intensive university environment in niche areas that are matched to the Dumfries and Galloway location, serves both regional and national stakeholders and has international applicability is being delivered here, on Crichton campus, Dumfries.”

 

Richard Lochhead, Minister for Further Education, Higher Education and Science said,  “Many congratulations to the University of Glasgow on its 20 years of success in Dumfries.

“The research being carried out at Crichton Campus is ground breaking, and its role in bringing top-notch further and higher education closer to people living in the South of Scotland is invaluable. Here’s to the next 20 years.”
