The University has risen 10 points in the Guardian University Guide 2020, published today (Friday, June 7) and is now 14th in the UK. It is second in Scotland, behind the University of St Andrews, which is ranked second overall.

For the first time since 2016, the University of Glasgow is ranked first in a subject area - Sports Science.

The University's strongest subjects, in terms of rank position out of the total number of institutions in that subject area, are:

  • Sports Science - 1st of 76
  • Nursing and Midwifery - 3rd of 71
  • Music - 4th of 80
  • Accounting & Finance - 6th of 101
  • Law - 6th of 101
  • Film production & Photography - 5th of 67.

Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University Professor Sir Anton Muscatelli said: "I am delighted that The Guardian University Guide has recognised the strengths of our world-changing institution and that we have moved up its ranking by 10 places from 24th place to 14th in the UK. Within the Russell Group, Glasgow is ranked 8th in 2020 - up from 15th in the 2019 rankings last year.

Glasgow ranks within the top 10 in the Russell Group for the following measures:

  • NSS Teaching Satisfaction (1st)
  • NSS Overall Satisfaction (2nd)
  • Career prospects (3rd)
  • Entry Tarriff (4th).

Compared with last year, Glasgow improved in rank position for seven of the nine metrics, which equates to 85% of the overall score.
