The Head of the College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences at the University of Glasgow will deliver this year’s Trades House of Glasgow Lecture on Thursday 9 July.

Professor Anna Dominiczak’s talk will be on the subject of ‘Patient-empowered precision medicine: Glasgow’s USP’ and will be delivered in the Kelvin Gallery at the University’s main building in Gilmorehill. The event is free and open to all with attendees required to register in advance at tradeshouselecture2015.eventbrite.co.uk. Doors will open at 5:30pm and the lecture will begin at 6pm.

Precision medicine is a cutting-edge area of medical science that aims to use genomics, proteomics and metabolomics analysis to develop new treatments for diseases that can be tailored to an individual’s physiology to maximise response and outcomes.

The University of Glasgow, working closely with NHS and industry, is at the forefront of research into precision medicine, and has heavily invested in facilities at the new South Glasgow University Hospital that will help scientists in the city with their efforts to make precision medicine a reality.

Prof Dominiczak said: “The future of healthcare is about getting the right treatment to the right patients at the right time through stratified or precision medicine. Stratified or precision medicine involves examining the genetic makeup of patients in their differing responses to drugs designed to treat diseases such as cancer, heart disease or arthritis. By building up an understanding of the ‘strata’ of responses we will create more personalised and effective forms of treatment for groups of patients most likely to benefit.

“We have developed a strategic partnership between academia, NHS and industry to transform management of chronic diseases globally by accelerating biomedical research, high-quality health care provision and economic growth. The unique combination of the electronic health records, new advances in DNA sequencing as well as volunteering by Glasgow patients place Glasgow at the cutting edge world-wide.”

The Trades House of Glasgow, established in 1605, is a registered charity which has played a pivotal role in fostering trade and industry in the city, as well as undertaking charitable work.
