First Vice-President of The International Criminal Court to appear at University of Glasgow Justice Colloquium

Justice Sanji Monageng, First Vice-President of the International Criminal Court at The Hague, is one of the keynote speakers at a postgraduate law colloquium which will be held at the University of Glasgow from 6-8 June 2012.

Organised by the PhD candidates at the School of Law, in association with the Centre for Law and Cosmopolitan Values at the University of Antwerp the three day event will explore aspects of international justice, including the operation of the Criminal Court, human rights across the world and international financial markets and criminal law.
Judge Sanji Monageng, who has been a judge of the International Criminal Court since 2009, and First Vice-President since March 2012, will address the colloquium on Thursday 7 June on ‘Functions and Cases of the Pre-Trial Chambers of the International Criminal Court’.
Judge Monageng was a member of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, appointed by the African Union, between 2003 and 2009, becoming chair of the Commission in November 2007. She also chaired one of the special mechanisms of the Commission, the Follow-up Committee on torture, inhumane, degrading and other treatment. In addition, Judge Monageng served as Deputy Chief Litigation Officer in the United Nations Observer Mission to South Africa in 1994. Prior to being appointed to the International Criminal Court Judge Monageng served as a High Court judge in the Kingdom of Swaziland, responsible for criminal and civil cases as well as constitutional matters. She also served as a judge of the High Court of the Republic of the Gambia in the same capacity.
