The University of Glasgow School of Law launches its own Diploma in Legal Practice.
The University of Glasgow School of Law launches its own Diploma in Legal Practice today (Thursday 23 September).
The Diploma is a required qualification for all law graduates looking to enter into the Scottish legal profession .
In its inaugural year, the University of Glasgow 's School of Law has the highest number of Diploma students in Scotland, with over 170 students enrolled.
The School of Law will launch its Diploma with a full-day conference for its diploma students. Students will hear from inspiring and key figures in the Scottish legal profession including:
* Sheriff Principal James Taylor BSc, LLB, Sheriff Principal of Glasgow and Strathkelvin at Glasgow
* Michael Graham, Messrs MacRoberts, Solicitors
* Lesley Thomson, Area Procurator Fiscal, Glasgow and Strathkelvin
* Advocate General for Scotland, The Right Honourable The Lord Wallace of Tankerness QC PC
* The Treasurer of the Faculty of Advocates, Alan Dewar
* The Right Honourable The Lord Tyre CBE
In the past year, the Centre for Legal Practice within the School of Law has been developing the Diploma programme, and will launch with 16 Senior Tutors, 125 Tutors, and the new Glasgow Legal 40 network. This new initiative has been exclusively designed for Glasgow Diploma students, and will act as a mentoring network which will allow Diploma in Legal Practice students to engage with distinguished members of the legal profession, all of whom are Glasgow graduates.
Douglas Mill, the Director of the Professional Legal Practice Team, said: “The Diploma is a major step for the University of Glasgow and the School of Law, but only the first step in engaging with the legal profession in life long learning in Law. I am delighted that so many students have the opportunity to undertake their Diploma and take the first step in their legal career at the University of Glasgow.”
For the last 10 years, the University of Glasgow School of Law provided the Diploma jointly with Strathclyde University, via the Glasgow Graduate School of Law (GGSL).
