The Chancellor of the University of Glasgow, Professor Sir Kenneth Calman, has opened the 2010 Association for Medical Education in Europe conference.
More than 2300 delegates are attending the prestigious event at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre in Glasgow, which runs until September 8.
Also addressing the opening day of the conference is Nicola Sturgeon MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing.
As part of the programme, delegates will visit the University of Glasgow’s School of Medicine to see problem based learning in action. They will also see examples of work from the School of Veterinary Medicine, including the haptic cow, which teaches veterinary students how to examine a ‘virtual’ cow.
Jill Morrison, Professor of General Practise and General Care at the University chaired the local organising committee for the conference and is delighted at the scale of the event.
She said: “To attract the AMEE Conference to the city is a great coup for Glasgow and then to attract so many delegates is a double success for us.
“We are delighted that both the Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing and the Chancellor of the University of Glasgow have given their time to open the conference.
“This year, for the first time, the sessions are being streamed live online and those who couldn’t make it here are able to sign up and watch the discussions.”
The conference programme includes five distinguished plenary speakers from around the world, 17 symposia, 420 short communications and 600 poster presentations. In addition, a pre-conference eLearning symposium in the University’s Medical School at the weekend attracted more than 200 participants. Delegates discussed the implications for the new learning technologies in relation to the training of doctors.
Founded in 1972, AMEE has become the leading international Association for medical education. AMEE helps teachers, doctors, researchers, administrators, curriculum developers and students keep up to date with developments in the rapidly changing world of medical and healthcare professions education.
In addition to organising the annual conference, AMEE publishes Medical Teacher the leading journal for the practising medical teacher and a series of practical guides for teachers.
