An Engineering Doctorate student at the Institute for System Level Integration (iSLI) has been named Student Engineer of the Year at the European Electronics Industry Awards.
Simon Brown is the third student from iSLI to have received the award in the past three years, which is given to outstanding students in electronics and software who have demonstrated a combination of both technical knowledge and practical application of skills.
The Engineering Doctorate (EngD) is a research degree jointly delivered by the University of Glasgow along with Heriot Watt, Edinburgh and Strathclyde universities. The programme is administered by Glasgow, where students graduate, and is directed by Professor Dave Hutchings of the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering.
A key component of EngD is a research project placement of at least three years, supported by an industry partner.
Simon's sponsor is Teledyne Defence based near Leeds where he has been working on a radar threat warning receiver, a ground-breaking product for both the company and the industry which is smaller, lighter and less power hungry than other systems on the market.
Simon has brought a great deal of innovative thinking to the team, especially in the areas of data and signal processing. He has also been working with the MoD Defence Scientific and Technology Laboratory (DSTL) on a new emitter identification algorithm and will be performing field trials in conjunction with DSTL to verify the overall system performance, and to build a deployable operational support tool to generate library information for the system.
Simon said: “I am delighted and honored to have been presented with this award. Full credit must go to my tutors at iSLI however. The guidance they have given me over the course of my time at the Institute has been invaluable, and in all honesty I don’t think I would have enjoyed this level of success without their help and advice.”
Siân Williams, EngD Centre Manager at the ISLI, said: “We are extremely pleased for Simon, who has displayed great skill and expertise throughout his time with us. This recognition is well-deserved for such an outstanding mind, while the fact that his success completes a hat-trick of Student Engineer of the Year wins for iSLI students serves to underline what a talented group of young engineers we have here.”

Notes to Editor
The Institute for Systems Level Integration sits at the critical interface between the academic and commercial engineering worlds. Its mission is to produce highly-skilled design engineers and researchers to meet the needs of the rapidly-changing global semiconductor industry. Founded in 1988 at the Alba Centre, in Livingston, iSLI was the world’s first centre of excellence to concentrate on postgraduate education and research in the methodology and applications of system-on-chip design, system level integration and related software and hardware technologies.
