University welcomes the Commonwealth Games

The University of Glasgow has warmly welcomed the decision to stage the 2014 Commonwealth Games in the city
The University of Glasgow welcomes the news that the 2014 Commonwealth Games is coming to Glasgow.
Principal Sir Muir Russell said: "We are absolutely delighted that Glasgow is to host the games. We were proud to back the bid and would offer our congratuations to all those who have worked so hard to achieve such a tremendous outcome.
"This is a great opportunity for the city and the University and we will certainly play our part in the lead up to 2014.
"The University of Glasgow has a huge commitment to increasing participation in sport and physical activity. Bringing the Games to Glasgow will inspire young people to take up sport, improve our national health and instil a sense of pride and confidence in Scotland.
"We run one of the largest student sport and activity programmes of all UK universities. We have a staggering student membership of 11,000 with more than 2,000 students using the sports facilities on a daily basis.
"60 per cent of the University's outdoor facilities, at the Garscube Sports Complex, are used by the local community, demonstrating how we contribute to the health and well-being of Glasgow.
"We look forward to 2014 and feel sure the Commonwealth Games will be a tremendous success for Glasgow and Scotland."
