The Uhiversity of Glasgow's Hunterian Museum will host a number of family events as part of this year's Scottish Geology Festival
As part of the Scottish Geology Festival, the Hunterian Museum is organising a number of events for all the family starting on Monday 5 September 2005.
Return of the Rock Doctors
Bring your pet rocks, minerals and fossils to the Hunterian Museum to see if our experts can identify them. Weekdays throughout September from 10.00 am.
Email a Dinosaur
Rock Docasaurus will do his best to answer your questions on geology, dinosaurs, fossils, and the landscape. Email anytime, and expect an answer as soon as Rock can figure it out (dinosaurs did not have the biggest of brains!)
Lunchtime Talks at the Hunterian
Every Tuesday, staff at the Hunterian Museum will give a ten-minute talk on geology, fossils or minerals, all from the Hunterian collections. Tuesdays 6, 13, 20 & 27 September at 12.45 pm.
Silver Panning
Book in advance for this once in a lifetime hunt for Scottish silver in the Ochil Hills. Museum curator Dr Neil Clark will lead you into the hills with a guarantee of seeing some real Scottish silver. Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 September, morning or afternoon sessions. To book, or for further information, contact Dr Neil Clark on 0141 330 3599.
Dr Neil Clark, Curator of Palaeontology at the Hunterian Museum and Chair of the Organising Committee of the Scottish Geology Festival said:
'For this Earth-shattering festival we will be ripping Scotland apart to see what it is made of, crunching it back together and driving huge ice-sheets across the mountains. We will be bringing dinosaurs and trilobites back to life and blowing the tops off volcanoes to see the great thicknesses of lava that flowed into the valleys. Gold, silver and other minerals will be extracted by you, if you take part in the many events organised all over Scotland. Experts will show you how the dramatic Scottish landscape formed in your area. Don't miss it!'
